While in New York this month, we took in rehearsals for the new tour of DREAMGIRLS coming to many of our Broadway series in 2013. Robert Longbottom, who directed the New York production (it played the famed Apollo Theatre in Harlem before embarking on a national tour), is once again at the helm as director/choreographer, adapting original director Michael Bennett’s brilliant work. Watching “Bobby” rehease his amazingly talented cast reminded me of some of the great Broadway musicals for which he’s been responsible, including SIDE SHOW and the estimable revival of FLOWER DRUM SONG, for which he received a Tony nomination.
This DREAMGIRLS promises us to be a big production, too; the tour features state of the art video elements and technology that didn’t exist back in the 80s, when DREAMGIRLS debuted . The show is being overseen by John Breglio, who produced the recent Broadway revival of A CHORUS LINE. Breglio, a leading New York producer and theatrical attorney, has been uninvolved in every Michael Bennett production.
